Literature Text

tenderly, tenderly

i wanted to write
something
that would capture
everything
you are and have
been for me, but
for the first time in my life,

words fail me.  how
can i put words to
the embrace that melts
fear, the rough-fingered hands
that are infinitely gentle, tenderly
guiding me as a child, as a
woman.  how

can i name the wisdom,
the skill, the voice
reading to me, soothing-

the womb that carried me, when i
was as of yet unknown, unformed,
a mere possibility.  how

can i define the heart
that always has room for more, the
home i have for always?  because
a mother is so much more
than words can say, and

you

are mine.

they ask what a mother is
to me.  as if i could say
in a sentence.  i've found, though,
what most rings true
is that 'mother' means

a resting place for children's
hearts

[and those never age]

Thank you.  I would never know the amazing woman you are without your love and the sacrifices you've made for me.  We don't get to choose who our mothers are, but if I could pick, it would always be you.
(c) 2014 Mary Stokes

I wrote this for my Mom, on Mother's Day.  One of three times I've ever seen her cry, which shook me.  I'm starting to realize that giving people poetry/words is one of the best/most personal gifts I can give.

Thanks.
